THE HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME - AUGUST 1914 GERMANY
AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK: JOHN H POLLARD
SUBJECT AND SETTING:
A story of two teenage sisters who arrived to stay with a German family at their home in Schleswig Holstein in late July 1914 for their summer holiday. The younger of the sisters was the author's mother in law, Elsie, who had told him some of the story before she died. But many of the key facts were missing, including the dates they arrived and left Germany and where exactly they stayed. The recent chance discovery in old Probate papers of Elsie's 100 year old autograph book gave some of the needed information: a mere five entries in old German handwriting, signed and dated by each of the five members of the Greman family disclosed the dates of arrival and departure, the names of the family and their location. It also gave the occupation of the head of the family - Postmaster of a holiday town called Plon near Lubeck, which the author verified with the Plon Tourist Office.
Research using contemporary news reports confirmed the negotiaiton of their repatriation and their tortuous return to the arms of their family in an England now at war with a country led by a grandson of Queen Victoria.
